3.0.

Well, the day has arrived. I am 30! With my nasty cold I didn’t sleep too well last night so Trev let me sleep in a bit. He left to go run errands and I got up and got ready and painted my nails. We’re thinking about going to see How to Train Your Dragon in 3D because we have some free passes to use and it’s got great ratings. We’ll be meeting up with some friends and family at our local pizza joint, Papa’s Pizza, for dinner. Of course I can’t complain about the weather either! Some years it snows on my birthday (sometimes blizzards), but today the high is 70! And tomorrow it’s 75!

A color called Squirrel

As you know, last week we painted the living room. I have been wanting to paint the living room for months, but Trevor hasn’t felt up to it. I eventually said that I would be happy if it was at least painted before my 30th birthday, so that is why last week was the week. Since we had our friends James and Michelle coming to visit from out of town, we had to have the painting all done and the house put back together by Friday afternoon.

We bought the paint on Monday after trying out different paint samples. I thought it might be lighter than I had wanted, but not too much. After spending a few hours painting on Tuesday I realized that the paint color was much too light, and it wasn’t really the gray color I was hoping for either. It had a violet or blue look to it! It also made the room feel cold. I hated it! When Kyle got here to meet up with Trevor to go to pool leagues and asked if we had painted our living room white, I knew we had to start over.

Wednesday morning Trevor had a meeting, so after that we headed to Home Depot and bought new paint. That morning I was freaking out looking around on Home Depot’s website and asking for help on facebook. I also had Betsy on the phone looking at paint colors with me. Trevor helped me settle on the color “Squirrel” by Behr. We went home and painted two coats that day. Thankfully the weather was awesome and we had the windows open and listened to music. We started out listening to 89.3 the current and then ended up listening to R.E.M. and The White Stripes. It looked great after two coats! Thursday morning we got up and did the touch up painting. We also took the painter’s tape off and touched up in those areas. After hours of Beck on shuffle, the room was done! I finished off by cleaning all the baseboards and door and window frames. We put all the furniture back after dusting it with Pledge, and everything was in it’s place and clean and great! I am so happy with how it turned out, even if it is a bit dark.

Here is the room before:

And here it is after!

It’s the same loveseat that once belonged to Great Aunt Frieda, just without the slipcover. The lighthouse picture used to be in this spot and we brought it back up from the basement again. I am so happy with how it turned out!

30 on Wednesday

Well, it’s been a busy few days! We painted the living room, re-painted the living room, cleaned for our weekend guests, our weekend guests came and went, lots of shopping happened, and Trevor threw me a surprise 30th birthday party! I was completely shocked. I’ll give more details about it later. Today I am enjoying having a day to do whatever I feel like, which I haven’t had in a while. After catching up on my blog reading I’m hoping to get some scrapping done. Unfortunately Trevor did not take pictures at the surprise party, so I am hoping to get some from some of those who were in attendance. Happy Sunday everyone!

Housewife

Today has been a busy day. I started the day by making a Target trip. I went to get all the deals going on this week, including the Toy Story combo pack (I got each blu-ray DVD combo pack for around $7). I also picked up some other grocery items. The total I spent was $68.62. What I find hilarious is the amount the receipt says I saved: $130.53, and it’s true! I will never get tired of couponing.

After my Target trip Trev and i painted the living room. At this point I am questioning my paint choice, as always. It is always so hard to get just the right color. It looked right on the card and even with the sample we painted on the wall, but I am wondering if I should have gone darker because it is looking more blue than gray to me right now. Of course. How do you really get a color that is just right? We’ll see what I think tomorrow in the daylight again. But whatever I think, I’m stuck with it! Anyway, when we were done painting I went to pool leagues with Trevor to hang out with the team and eat some pizza, and now I am finally home with some computer time before Trev gets home and we watch Lost. His pool teammate Mark usually comes over to watch Lost with us but it’s a good thing he isn’t playing pool and coming here tonight because our living room is all over the place in the middle of this painting project!

So, yesterday I actually did work on the craft projects I was planning on! Our friend Brian was over hanging out with Trevor last night, and during that time I finished up these wreaths for the front and back doors. I have been seeing lots of creative and beautiful wreaths all over the internet lately. I made a paper one for the door for the winter, but now that Spring is here I needed a change! My friend Karly made one of these yarn wreaths also and I love how her’s turned out. I thought I’d give it a try.

I bought the small wreath forms at Dollar Tree, and even the yarn! Otherwise I used things I already had at home. I made felt flowers and fabric yo-yos. I am pretty happy with how they turned out!

Here is the one on the back door:

We are really hoping to buy new doors in the not too far off future. Installation is just so expensive. We live in an old house. Anyway…

There is the wreath on the front door:

And again

Well, I have come down with yet another cold. I don’t know what it is about the past three months, but before them I hadn’t been sick in a very very long time.

Trevor is putting Windows 7 on our computer, so I’ll be back tomorrow with some actual blogging. Hopefully I can find some energy to work on some crafty projects I have been wanting to share!

Happy Monday!

By the way, since I posted about the Up movie deal, I thought some of you might be interested in this one:

The yellow is going away

It’s happening. We have decided on a paint color after trying a few different samples. The yellow living room (it’s been yellow for 4 years) will be painted “Silver Screen.” We bought the paint. Now we just have to actually do the painting…

From one page to another

It’s late and I’m listening to albums on lala.com- First I listened to Them Crooked Vultures and now I’m listening to the latest Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach. It’s all been great music for a late Friday night after having a fun night out with friends.

Here are a couple of the layouts I did this week. These are photos from the weekend in 2008 that Trev and I flew to Vegas and met up with my cousin Jen and her husband Matt, who drove from Phoenix. It was a great time together. I made a photobook of our weekend through Shutterfly, so I only did 2 pages for my scrapbook.

This first page I just grabbed some scraps and did.

I have been collecting magazine ads and color combo ideas from magazines for a long time to help with inspiration for my pages. I don’t use them often enough! I decided to make a page inspired by a magazine page and here is what I came up with. It didn’t turn out quite how I imagined, but it’s something a little different I guess, and helped me use more scraps.

Searchin’

Sometimes I like to look at the things people searched for that brought them to my blog. Sometimes, I really have to wonder what people are thinking.

The top search used to find the blog is”origami lotus flower.” That’s because I made an origami lotus flower last summer and blogged about it. Apparently that’s something people like to make. But the second and third most used searches to find the blog is “is it really going to snow tomorrow” and “is it going to snow soon.” There are many other variations further down the list. Now, that may seem strange because this is not a place where I blog about the weather. I titled one entry “Is it really going to snow soon?” and because of this, people find me when they want to know about their local weather.

I just want to know what goes through these people’s minds…Do they think, “Self, I wonder if it’s going to snow tomorrow anywhere in the world?” because that’s the kind of results they are going to get when they type it into a search engine! When I want to know the weather forecast the first place I think to look is not google. So, for all you people out there that end up here when you want to know if it’s really going to snow, how about trying the local news channel’s web site, or weather.com. I’m just sayin’. I have no feelings of anger towards you, but am baffled, and I’d just like to help you out by pointing you in the right direction. 😉

Save the earth and mucho dinero

It’s really hip now to do “green” stuff. I just like to call it sensible, logical, smart. ;-0 Well, I mean, at least in the cases where you save yourself a bunch of money at the same time! Here’s what I’ve done so far this year to make some thrifty and environmentally friendly changes around our house:

*I bought a bunch of microfiber towels to use as much as possible in place of paper towels. The paper towels will probably never completely be replaced, but the microfiber towels are great for cleaning and wiping up stuff. I think they work better than the paper towels. I bought the microfiber towels at Dollar Tree! They came in packs of 2 for $1, so this was not a big investment (I found this photo online. The ones I bought are blue, not neon green)! I am thinking about purchasing some cloth napkins to use, but haven’t yet.

*I hacked my Swiffer. I’ve been using a Swiffer WetJet for years. It works well and is really handy. The problem is that the disposable cleaning pads and the cleaning solution are quite expensive in comparison to other methods of cleaning. I have tried to buy them when they are on sale or with coupons. I had heard about other people hacking their Swiffers, but just finally tried it myself and i don’t know why I waited so long. They make the solution bottles so that it is hard/impossible to remove the cap. So how did I hack my Swiffer?

  1. I took a Swiffer cleaning solution bottle I had used up and put the end with the cap in warm water for a couple of minutes and it came right off! I then put my own cleaning solution in the bottle. I’m using some Mr. Clean we already had, which you only need to use a small amount of mixed with water. I put the cap back on and it works just fine! When that runs out I may switch to a vinegar, water, and tea tree oil mixture. This alone will be much cheaper than buying more bottles, and also cuts back on the waste of all those bottles.
  2. I took one of my Dollar Tree microfiber towels and cut it in half to fit the bottom of the Swiffer. It sticks right to the velcro! I’ll be able to throw these in the washer and use them over and over. Not only is this better than throwing away all those disposable cleaning pads, I won’t have to spend another dime on them either!

*This may sound like a no-brainer, but I switched from buying the disposable toilet bowl cleaners to going back to the old-fashioned toilet brush. I had bought two different kinds of cleaners because of coupons originally and also because it seemed cleaner and I hate cleaning the toilet! In the end I just couldn’t justify the trash they contributed and the extra cost of the refills.

*I have been making my own daily shower spray. My friend Sarah showed me a link to this site with lots of different “recipes” to try. I have tried two of them. Both of them worked much better than any of the ones I’ve bought at the store. I am not exaggerating. We have noticed a big difference and think our tub is the cleanest it has ever looked! So it’s greener because I am not buying more and more plastic bottles of shower spray and using a bunch of harsh chemicals, and it’s also extremely cheap to make. It helps that it actually also works better! Here are the two that I have made. I made the first one one time but switched to the other one because we didn’t like the vinegar smell. The one we are using now is virtually odorless.

Spray #1:  Mix together 1 cup of water, 1 cup of vinegar, the juice of half an orange and 1 tbsp. of dishwashing soap. Pour into a spray bottle and shake gently to mix.

Spray #2: Combine 3 cups of water, 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol, 2 tsp. of liquid spot-reducing dishwasher rinse and 6 drops of dishwashing soap. Stir to mix, but not so much that a lot of of bubbles are produced. Pour into a spray bottle and spray the shower daily. Do not rinse.

I hope this has given you some ideas of areas where you can make changes too. Let me know if you have any other ideas to share with me or if you have any questions. 🙂
